DID YOU KNOW THAT BLACK COUPLES WERE ABLE TO OVERCOME BARRIERS TO INTIMACY AND VULNERABILITY BY HAVING MORE MEANINGFUL CONNECTIONS WITH THEIR PARTNER?
A 2024 research study showed that when Black partners feel supported by their partner/spouse, they have higher levels of relationship success. When a Black person experiences their partner responding to their stress in a manner that is understanding, helpful, and positive vs negative, blaming and minimizing their experience the relationship quality and satisfaction is greatly increased. This is very important because supportive behavior is one of the biggest predictors of well-being.
Yes, great relationships contribute to so many positive health outcomes, and research shows that great relationships contribute to better outcomes than just staying single. However, relationship distress does the opposite. It increases negative physical and mental health diagnoses. Since African Americans are the least likely to reach out for marital counseling, experiences like Black Marriage Week are beneficial. We bring the relationship and marriage counselors beyond the couch to a community forum to address the stigma, and to help provide couples the skills necessary to improve their relationship.
Despite the decline in divorce rates, in 2021, Black Relationships had a 21% divorce rate, while every other ethnicity had a divorce rate of less than 11.4%. However, I think it is important to focus on how we can make our relationships work. What can we do to stay HAPPILY married, especially when we have seen an increase in couples getting divorced and then remarrying the same person? Let's make sure we focus on staying in love and avoiding years of misery due to misunderstandings, disagreements, and inability to see eye to eye.
Research shows that if a woman’s parents are divorced, her chances of getting divorced increase by 69%, and if both of a married couple’s parents divorce, the possibility of their divorce increases to 189%. Quick question: how do we expect these individuals to be successful when their examples of success are lacking? As a matter of fact, they may have learned the exact skills and strategies that increase the likelihood of divorce. Since building a legacy of happy, healthy, supportive relationships is important, we need to focus on what we can do to help people have the relationships they desire; the relationships they signed up for. Black couples can have this by learning, relearning, receiving reminders, and enforcing the skills that create healthy relationships. Getting support with implementing these beneficial strategies will help couples create the healthy relationships that all of our children can learn from.
